    Re: Black screen videos

I should mention that VLC and "restricted extras" are installed.

I also just found that SMPlayer and mpv can play them, but VLC and "Videos" won't work.

    Black screen videos

Upgraded to 24.04 and now my meme video snippets (MP4) are just black. Most of them, not all. Sound works.

    How do I troubleshoot this?

    Ryzen 3700X, RTX3060 with nVidia's binaries.

    EDIT: I...
  3. Re: 24.04 causes my harddrive to say BRAAAPPP

Okay. I will dump this thing and get a new.

The thing is that I do find it to show suspicious slowdowns at times, aside from the weird sound.

    Thanks!

    Double post.
  5. [SOLVED] Re: Rhythmbox - where does it store song ratings?

Never mind. They returned. It just took a while for some weird reason.
  6. 24.04 causes my harddrive to say BRAAAPPP

I have a 4TB mechanical 2.5" archive drive (aside the NVMe OS drive) with an ext4 partition, and it intermittently rasps now - which it did not do with 23.10, 23.04 etc back to 19.10 or some such.

  7. [SOLVED] Rhythmbox - where does it store song ratings?

Just made a clean 24.04 install and copied back ~/.local/share/rhythmbox

My playlists are there, but none of all the stars I have checked in the Rating column to sort which songs I like best.

  8. Re: do-release-upgrade "No new release found"

Oh. Well - thank you for information and patience.

My confusion is cleared up - 23.10 is released (the ISO is right there). It is the update that isn't, due to some bug.

    And I take it that...
  9. Re: do-release-upgrade "No new release found"

Okay, now several days have passed, 23.10.1 is released, and "sudo do-release-upgrade" still doesn't work for me.

It has been like this for many releases now. Years. Why is there a week-or-more...
  10. Re: do-release-upgrade "No new release found"

All right, thank you for that answer!
  11. do-release-upgrade "No new release found"

Every new release I get this for many days after the date.

I live in Sweden, is there some delayed release schedule for Europe or something? Even when I set it to download from "Main server"?

Aha! Why did I never think of that?

    Thanks!
  13. Re: 23.04 installed, Windows gone from bootloader?

Oh well - I guess I'll just have to swallow the bitter pill and reinstall Windows.
Remove the Ubuntu NVMe to acertain that Windows doesn't destroy the bootloader, spend ages doing updates and...
  14. Re: 23.04 installed, Windows gone from bootloader?

It is entirely possible that the Window boot files were on the Linux drive. I do not know.

I am quite sure however that my BIOS has been set to UEFI only all this time. I just checked.

  16. 23.04 installed, Windows gone from bootloader?

    Hello

I have two harddrives on this PC, one for Ubuntu and the other for Windows 10, with a dual-boot GRUB defaulting to Ubuntu.

Up until I installed 23.04 this worked fine. Now it just boots...

    Re: gvfsd-trash fills /var/log/syslog

    I should mention this:
Running "sudo gnome-extensions disable ding@rastersoft.com" did not work.

Then I ran "sudo apt install dconf-editor" and after that "gnome-extensions disable...

    Re: gvfsd-trash fills /var/log/syslog

Yep - seems like DING is the culprit. Removing /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ding@rastersoft.com cured it.

    Re: gvfsd-trash fills /var/log/syslog

I should add that the remedy is temporary - the process restarts after a while and begins spamming /var/log/syslog again.

    Bugs in 22.04

Instead of filing bug reports and watch them vanish into cyberspace, I figure I'd list the various errors I have so far encountered after one day with 22.04. Feel free to ignore them.

Not sure what you mean by that.

    Let me clarify the situation:

The work PC is a CAD/FEM station that needs performance. It is actually a Threadripper Pro with 128 GB 8-channel RAM.
